DEFAULT WORLD DREAMING

← Back to the Portfolio
Opening Reception: Thursday March 20th, 6:30-9:30PM
On View from March 20 through April 19, 2014 at Gallery 151. 132 West 18th Street, New York, NY 10011.
Burning Man culture exists in a dynamic world of opposites: The world that is created, and the world that seems assigned as the established, accepted, and imposed reality.
To those in the Burning Man community, the world of the status quo is named “ the default world.” The contrast of Burning Man’s values of radical inclusion, self-reliance, non-commodification, gift giving, and radical self-expression are the hallmarks of its gatherings, and because they feel so creative and so liberating, they feel more real than the “real” world.
This exhibition explores these aspects of profound effects on the quotidian life around us, breaking through the rigidity and conformity to unleash something original, vital and iconoclastic in our existence. Here we chart a path of originality through the establishment, questioning its “reality” by creating our own. We examine the dichotomy between living in the default world, and dreaming awake a reflection of a world that could be.
